Review from the RS Films DVD

80 thousand years ago, giant winged creatures ruled the world. They lived in peace... until one of them, a
renegade, tried to kill them all and spread blood all over the world. It was later captured by the others and
imprisoned in the earth... forever. Present time, a construction team is digging a huge subway tunnel in
Bangkok and awakens the beast. Soon enough the dropdead gorgeous Leena, the daughter of Dr. Pierre -- a
scientist who first discovered proof of the creatures back in the 70's, and her paleontologist/geologist
friend Tim are on hand to make the discovery of a lifetime. But a special team of military have another
plan... to destroy the Garuda.

From there what we get is your typical giant monster on the loose movie. The creature was created mostly via
cg and it shows. Only seven person worked on the special fx so its understandable. Bear in mind that the
budget of GARUDA was maybe 1/10th of the American GODZILLA, but unlike the atrocity that was that North
American remake, GARUDA is lotta fun Saturday morning style.

The film's monster was once worship as a God in Thailand, so its only natural that it upset many people on how
the creature was used and portrayed in the film. When it hit theater, GARUDA became a huge success in
Thailand, breaking most records! With movies like ONG BANK, THE BODYGUARD and this one, Thailand is soon
becoming a country to look for when it comes to quality movie making and an alternative to Hollywood.

The film is presented in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio and it is enhanced for 16x9 television. The colors are nicely
saturated, skin tones are well rendered but there is some compression from time to time especially during the
darker scenes which can be a little annoying. We get the option of two Thai audio track, one in DTS and the
other in 5.1 Dolby Digital. Both of them are loud and clear and make great use of the directional sound fx.
There is optional easy to read English subtitles available. As for extras, there's the theatrical trailer and
a 25 minutes behind the scene, in Thai only, which features interview with the director Monthon Arayangkoon
and the lead cast. For some rather odd reason, whenever someone smokes a cigarette it is fogged!? We also get
to see how most of the fx were created, how the stunts were executed, scenes filmed with blue screen like the
fight in the hallway and more. The film is separated in 12 chapters, features animated menus with the same
damn pop/rock song on every menu, no booklet or inlay card and it comes in a smaller keep case.

Ini review garuda dari Thai Toku

Kam Lee reviews the Thai kaiju film Garuda.

First off, for those of you who may not know what GARUDA is, let me give you a quick layman's explanation. In the HINDU belief, GARUDA is the "King of the Birds", and though not a true god, he is often depicted along with the god VISHNU. Usually as VISHNUs ride. VISHNU would ride on GARUDAs back. GARUDA is a half-man / half-eagle - hybrid. Anyhow, from what I understand - Thailand has many GARUDA statues all around BANGKOK and other areas, and this film caused a ton of controversy through out the HINDU population.

Let me say first that I am not really a fan of CGI monsters... I hated the 1998 Tristar GODZILLA films as much as most of the true G-Fans out there! I thought that the YONGARY remake was even worse then that, and I loath mostly all the CGI American monster films, with just a few exceptions! Well, as you may have guessed - yes, GARUDA is a CGI monster film. Yet, I feel it's one of the best CGI monster films to date. Although not a true Kaiju film... this film is worth checking out! I really feel that fans awaiting to see "GODZILLA: Final Wars" should give GARUDA a view for the simple reason of style. GARUDA has the style and feel of a RYUHEI KITAMURA film. KITAMURA's film style is fast paced action with fast camera work and quick cuts as well as slow motion moments that pause a scene for feel and emotion. They are the kind of films that put you right smack in the middle of all the action and fights. They are also dark moody films that convey an overwhelming sense of fear and dread. And last but not least, they usually have a killer sound track with a mix of heavy rock, industrial, techno, and metal music! I feel that GARUDA is also such a film that conveys these very unique styles of filming and techniques.

Anyhow, now on to the review.

The film begins with the telling of a legend of a race of ancient bird like creatures from 80,000 years B.C. The advent of a vicious renegade killer among them with a deafening screech and great fighting skills. Of how it was captured by it's brethren and imprisoned in a tree to be left behind as the others migrated away to far off land. - 1975 - in Indian Kashmir; French archaeologist Dr. Pierre discovers a Garuda tomb just as the Pakistani Army bombs the area. His assistant pushes him out of the way of a cave in and he barely escapes with only a Garuda toe nail as evidence.

Present day- 80 meters below Bangkok, diggers drilling a tunnel for a subway come across a solid rock formation in the lime rock. They discover a fossilized skull of what appears to be a giant bird like creature in bedded in the stone.

Leena - the 20 something daughter of Dr. Pierre, tries to convince the Archaeological Committee of Thailand of her father's theory that the Garuda race may be an evolved species of the archaeopteryx. The feathered birdlike dinosaur from the Jurassic period. She thinks that the species may have evolved in Thailand and ask for permission for an exploration. The committee refuses her request and she is denied because of her being a half-cast French-Thai mix.

This distrust between the Thai people among foreigners seems to be an underscoring theme through out the whole film, and even though I feel it's a bit overkill it does have it's place within the story.

Leena's assistant Tim (an American paleontologist) seems to make up most of the comical relief within the film. From his wild theories, to his speech - speaking mostly in Thai - until he gets excited and reverts to shouting in English. So his presence in the film plays as a sort of balance between all the xenophobic moments.

Leena is contacted by her uncle and ask to return to Bangkok a.s.a.p. Leena and Tim are escorted back to Bangkok in military helicopters where they meet a military special forces group lead by Commander Toschai (The unsung hero of the film). Some more foreign distrust and insults ensue until they are taken into a base of ops room located somewhere in the subway, which is now evacuated with the exception of the military. They are told a story from Leena's uncle and are shown the fossil skull found by the diggers.

Leena and Tim now ask to see the site where the skull was found because they feel more fossil evidence of these animals exist. They discover a cave, break into it and find the prison tree of the renegade Garuda from the story at the films start. Leena and Tim are taken away and locked into a room as the military secure the area. Leena's uncle bows and preys for forgiveness before what appears to be the fossil remains of a Garuda as Toschai watches from the surveilance camera. Toschai has a flashback to when a member of his group is killed by a NAGA (serpent god). Leena and Tim manage to escape the room they are being held in by Tim using excavation tools on the door. Later as Tim attempts to help Leena escape capture from the military he knocks down some light rigs and causes a black out.

Leena escapes and is pursued by Toschai and some of his men through the subway. At the same moment, the military attempts to reset the light rigs of which causes an electrical overload.

An electric shock goes up through Garuda foot, and yes, this causes the bad renegade killer monster to revive from it's ancient slumber. Meanwhile, Tim learns from one of the special forces guy that they are a special troupe created to fight and kill gods. With magical weapons (rune carved knives) and hard ass fighting skills they are sent in to take on ancient gods.

Anyhow, what comes next is fast paced action and really cool fight scenes. Especially, the cool knife fight scene in a hallway with a single soldier and Garuda. Leena haphazardly discovers that the fossil nail she carries can call the Garuda if it's scraped across a solid surface, and we get the first close up of Garuda and get the feel for the size and scale of the creature.

I don't want to spoil all of the cool action scenes, but trust me once this film get rolling it's one fun ride! Later Toschai decides to set a trap for the Garuda. Of course things go wrong once more because of Leena and Tim's unintentional involvement, and they cause an explosion that causes the cave to flood from the river. Our heroes escape of course, and so does Garuda. After causing chaos in the subway and once more trying to corner Leena, Garuda is repelled by tear gas from the military. Toschai reunites with the remaining members of his group and attempts to take down Garuda as it comes out of the subway entrance. Garuda escapes in a scene I won't spoil here, and yes, one of our heroes dies at this point. Garuda now takes to the skies of down town Bangkok, and starts attacking innocent citizens.

Later, Toschai and Leena confront the government to explain what is attacking the city. Again more xenophobic moments with Leena and the government officials ensue until her and Toschai tell of a plan to trap Garuda. Of course the plan backfires as Toschia finally realizes he is not fighting just a stupid animal, but an intelligent thinking creature. Well, I won't give away the ending - if you want to know what happens - get the movie... it's now out on DVD, and I'm sure if you hunt it down you won't be disappointed!
