I just went to my local pro camera place to get a new system bag, and after talking a while he said that they were set on a full frame sensor for the D3 which will be announced sooner than we all think, he said that as a solution for Nikon's continued DX line of APS optimized lenses, Nikon will use a "hybrid" full frame sensor at half resolution for the "sweet spot" DX lenses, and a 20+mp (!!) size for 35mm lenses.
I don't think it's complete BS either, he's the owner of the place (they're moving to a larger location in a few days, also a very large Nikon authorized dealer.) He mentioned a bunch of lenses being worked on / finished up from Nikon and Canon as well, no way he can pull this stuff out of nowhere.
