Hmmm, CMIIW but a black man calling another black man "nigga" is fine (like calling him brotha'), however a non black man calling a black man "nigga", now that's serious racism issue there... not to mention the caller needs to prepare for some serious hurting.

yeah...
no mang Jami, i was totally broke by then. God knows what if they got too close to you. Downtown Minneapolis may not be as rough as Bronx in NYC where you often hear sirene and gunshots. but still, i sort of was lost in the big city and it was not common when people get jumped by a bunch of motherf^^^^^s just like what happened to my roomie. If I replied politely they may think i was just wussy geek who got lost, and it would have been their perfect time to take advantage of me. But I too was outnumbered if i replied negatively. So I kept it calm and distanced myself from them. If you find yourself in a situation like that, keep the proximity at a level that you feel safe.
I wasnt offended by that name. I've been called with derogatory names before. I too used that N word, appropriately of course. You just dont call any black dude with that word. But my brother in law who is african-american also takes much liberty in calling me that name.

i think here's the dilemma that occurred when people try to guess where im from :
white dudes may think Im chinese or japanese, best effort they could : Filipino. No, they can barely tell if Im black or asian/oriental.
Black dudes may be 70% sure if Im black or asian from God knows where. :D
Malaysian often get their first time right that im : bumi putera indon. ::ngakak2::

so yeah. it's just funny how cultural thing can be.
@raido,
what i mean by that much polite expression is: i dont give a damn.

mang jami

jojox
15-09-2006, 01:39 AM
yeah raido,
i think there's always a bit of xenophobia on anybody. having said that, it's quite natural to feel somehow strange or even more : fear toward things that are so different . This is true when I shop in a mall and I could tell the shopattendants were rather reluctant to approach me. So, somehow with this unique skin of mine, i created a small amount of fear that takes quite subtle effect on them. Unless I showed friendly smilies, they probably would open a conversation. Other than that, they kept watching me in a distance. That kind of cultural gap, I think, we could very well use on the situation that I had.

every man is deemed to be a womanizer :P unless, of course there's been a confusion in their sexual orientation. (so yeah, im straight) :D

yeah i get this a lot too.. especially those chinese singaporeans will think i'm either malay or filipino because of my skin, one teacher of mine even thought i'm a hawaiian! haha that one is really flattering. and some russian dude i bumped on italy asked if i'm a japanese.

That's how I could mostly tell which is which. No...it's not 100% always accurate. Just some ideas.

i remember that commercial, it was great. :D
anyway, talking bout diversity...has anyone ever heard or probably even have seen "SEPET" ?
It was made and shown in Malaysia couple yrs ago. I heard the director is great. She's been known to produce public commercials which reflect the diversity of races in malaysia. Couldn't remember her name,but her works seemed to be so efficient in communicating the message to the public.

Yeah, Raido, I hear you dude. When I met a japanese here, it was no longer the language barrier that made it hard, but the culture itself; the way she thinks and does things, you know.

@ phelangy, dang....it's gotta be sux to be you. You know what it's like? It's like going to strip-club. You know you can watch anyone you want, but you just cant touch em. Unless, of course, you pay the price. All im saying is, maybe couple years down to road, when things look so ugly and still you havent found Mr.Right, I suppose you might want to consider other non-bataknese potentials like my other batak friends do. But, is it (to marry of batak race and no other) quite common in your paternal family? Dont mean to be rude, but is it only Sitorus who does that? :D

"Lebaran" is rather a word used by Indonesian only. people usually say "Happy Eid!" (selamat Idul Fitri)

Idul Fitri = Eid ul-Fitr

I would agree with you that someone has to come up with a topic. Not me though. I can't think of anything at the moment. Unless you guys are interested in this topic " how do you shop for clothes?" I just submitted this topic under fashion category but the discussion there is in Indonesian. I suppose we could have the same discussion here if you guys don't mind.

Or how about discussing watching movies?

- do movies help us improve our english or just add more confusion?
- can we really ignore the subtitles to be able to learn straight from the conversation in movies?

E121F

- add more confusion lol
I like interactive object. Movie is not the interactive media

- Subtitles usually help especially when the people talking have accents

These are the closest I could write as I am not sure how to write it phonetically.
Torono instead of Torontou (British)
Padicle instead of Paticle (British)
Beder instead of Bete (British)
Totly instead of Toutaly (British)

you are right on first guess
We somehow omit the second 't' appeared in the word and replace it with slight pause or give it less tension when we pronounce it

Toronto -> Toron'no
Particle ->Par'icle
Better -> Bet'er
Totally -> To'ally
Distorted -> Distor'ed
etc

as for harddisk, actually it can be translated the same as compact disc, which is "cakram padat" ... similar stuffs, different storage capacities ... but normally we don't need to translate terms people already familiar with ...

It seems like now is a busy time for most people here. I have to do many things in the same time with a short deadline:
- Starting research on next Monday but I must do shitty bureaucration from the institution e.g. letters, which I cannot predict when they will be ready.
- Writing a publication for international congress, which I just know that the deadline is tomorrow!
- Preparing an oral comprehensive test, in the meantime I have to confirm three representative supervisors for that, and aslso with the fixed schedule.
- Preparing my exit permits e.g. passport etc. for next month

Ufff - I forgot to have my lunch today :-(

at some chapter.. he said
teacher bryan : "it's important for it to.. "
teacher bryan : "... ah.. i forgot.."
teacher bryan : "nevermind then, not that important.."

after one hour (we're supposed to study for three hours straight) he said

My opinion : take whatever you need for the job you want

For now, I don't see the advantage taking master degree if I want to work. I may not taking master soon after I graduate. People these days need more experienced people rather than highly knowledgeable people. One side is the ones that have proven ability, and the other side it's still unknown.

Miss L

This situation is vice versa when you work as academician in university. Students demand more-educated people, at least the ones with Master Degree ;-)

I'll second that. Plus IMHO, the necessity of taking master/any kind of post graduate degree depends on where you work. E.G. should you work as government employee, having a high(er) degree will make a significant difference for career development (and the salary of course :P).
There are also some private companies who demand high qualifications (incl.master degree) in their particular job vacancy (usually managerial position or higher).

However I know some people who only graduated from Diploma (DIII) who earn very well as they work in foreign company. As far as I know they even have more lucrative income than some graduates guys..

It's not about GRE that thrills my throat when we talk 'bout graduate school, it's just that conscience of knowing how high can I go. However, being a nearly fresh graduate, I ought to know what sort of expertise that is blatantly and most immediately needed in the jobsite. So to speak, I intend to get some oversight of that after I pass the door, ya know what im sayin?
but here's the thing that i fear most, that one could loose his/her cognitive skills once he/she feels much apt and find an economical comfort from work. That for some, is quite a bargain.

Constantly studying, and gaining more knowledge and skill are compulsory when a person wants to advance in life. However IMHO, some people may get a little bit misguided when thinking that high degree is some kind of magic wand to get "perfect" job and salary.

I know that some people tend to lose interest in pursuing higher degree (or even attending short courses) once she/he is well settled and has "satisfying" income. In the end, it all comes back to the person. If they are strong-willed enough, they'll overcome anything so that they can continue studying.
If not, meeting the endless dead lines, raising the kids, consecutive out-of-town assignments, etc.etc (you name it) will be sufficient enough as the reasons why they don't do the upgrading. And last but not least..let's not forget the financial factor. You can never say attending Post Graduate program is not expensive (unless you're lucky enough to get 100% scholarship), especially in Indonesia. Even the extension program for the DIII holders doesn't come cheap..

yup. Education is a not come free. Higher education will not guarantee you to get "perfect" job and salary.
Some people need to get their master diploma but not for others. I guess it depends on the requirements of your company or job.

Exactly, studying is not just walking in the evening. You need reason to do that.
So, I asked myself : how master degree help me increase the likelihood I get a better job/position in a company? I don't seem to be able to give a good answer.

I'll see what company requires me to have. If they really NEED me to have the skill of post graduate students, then I have a reason to continue my study.
stronger reason -> stronger commitment doing something

This 70-80% of my life is spent for study without knowing how would they be useful for my practical purpose. And it was not an easy road. If I spend more of my time for this and only get miniscule amount of gain. I'll probably gonna regret it.

so now I've started to make decisions on which job suits me the best...better than preparing it years later...

Big time!

Sorry, curhat dikit yah!

Have any of you guys ever felt that all you have studied in college is for naught?

I'm currently a chemical engineering student and I'm almost halfway in my college years but to tell you guys the truth, I'm not really interested in all these stuff. Sure, I'm a pretty decent learner and my grades are above average but I don't take pride in those. To be really honest, I've always liked to cook since I was a young kid and my cooking skills have improved over the years. I guess I want to open my own restaurant. I was still unsure though whether I'm skilled enough or not for that so one day, I asked my mum and sis to distribute my ace-dish: spaghetti ala bolognaise, to their friends to sample and the result... I was pleasantly surprised when the response was positive. I guess I might be getting on something here. I have not really given any thought sto what I want to be or what I want to do later in my life until this event. Being a professional cook doesn't sound really bad after all.

Alas, cooking is like 180 degree different than chemical engineering. I suppose I've arrived at a crossroad in my life. Should I continue this mundane existence of life or should I really do something radical here?

Once I felt the same way..as If what I've studied in university means almost naught in job field. Actually not only what I've learned in college level, but also what I had to go through during the elementary, junior and high school. For instance, I didn't see how the knowledge of the cilliata reproduction system will help me raising my salary :P But then one of my colleague told me one thing that made sense to me : it's the processing of getting the knowledge and the science that matters : in the end it builds the formation of the systematic and our logic thinking. The way you process the data into paper and reports, the way we arrange information in our brain when answering the problems in exams. Somehow it was a consolation to me ; my years in university weren't completely wasted.

About your "mundane" existence, izlude. It all depends on you. I dunno your situation. Are you 100% depending on your parents financially and morally (like most kids in Indonesia)..If so, are they the type of parents who are supportive to their offspring no matter what? Or can you make it on your own should they decide not to support you anymore. Are you willing to take a risk, to do whatever it takes, forsaking all others to pursue your dream.
It’s just my two cents…
