Let's talk about... Hmm...
How about ourselfs. You know, like where you live, what you do, your family. Things like that....
Let's start with me. I live in Jakarta, I'm a law student of Tarumanagara University. I live with my grandparents. I'm an Aquarian. My hobby is reading, especially history and gossip.
Well... how about you guys?

The rules is "Talk in English, please". But we have no specific topic to talk.. So, miss moderator, do you have an interesting topic? Btw, IMO we can try to reply all the message/topics in english in all KG forums, not only on this thread ;)

Hello everyone!! Waaaw.. feels good to be back!! Well, to build your grammar skills, what you have to do is learn all the 'regulations' or 'rules'. The next step after would be to practice your use of the English language with the people around you.. well, it would be very wise if you choose to talk with the people that might possibly know more than you. That way, those people would be able to correct you in your sentences. But don't forget that language for speaking and writing are 2 different things! So,, being able to talk does not necessarily mean that you are able to write.

Okay, talk about ourselves, hein?! Hm, well, I'm a highschool student in my last year, still searching my way in learning french! That's my priority right now.. I'll leave it at that for the moment!

Hi all.. i had used to write down anything in English, as some of you may already noticed that most of my posts in [KG] were mostly written in English. Aside from school, which is a rarity for me to paying attention to, i had never taken any formal English education. Books and movies are my teachers. Therefore, generally i spoke and wrote English solely based on my intuition which oftenly brought me to a grammar-havoc even though that i could say that i had more vocabulary than most of people my age that i know of (not that i had loads of friend though :) ). Well, all i could say that i'm still learning English especially to correct my Grammars and my first step i guess, by taking TOEFL test, which most people said that you're definitely going to fail on TOEFL if your English only based on so-called intuition.

About me, hmm.. all i could say that i also had a backpack-trip plans sometime this December with destinations abbreviated as 3B (Borobudur, Bromo, Bali). The three of us (me and my friends) had jotted the departure-month but not yet the date as we dont want to ruin our backpacker-trip with supposedly-unnecessary details. Afterall, what would backpacker means if you know every details of the trip you'd had?.

kissing a fool (dulu george michael)
george selalu menganggap dirinya looser. hampir semua lagu george michael emang rada begitu mulai dari "i can't make u love me", "where di your hearts go", "one more try"... jadi dia menganggap dirinya seorang "fool" setelah Cathy Yeung (cewe george) putus ama dia cuman karena cathy terlalu denger banyak omongan orang yang khawatir hubungannya dengan george...

hail to the thief ... entar aku tanya ama thom yorke dulu ...

I've been very exhausted for this whole week, i get to sleep for barely five hours a day. And yet nothing, not a single-good-reasonable-significant thing i have achieved. I'm not sure what has gone wrong. I wasn't like this when i was two-three years younger than my current age. *sigh*

If i simply able to forget all the problems i had, then i'd forget about it. But, these problems i had are ones that needed to be solved. If i'd forget about it, then eventually it will come up again in an even more monstrous way.

But however, nowadays, i had taken some different prespective on how i saw the problem (one of my problems actually), and lo! i had seen a light. Though faint it was, but then it was as enough as a drop of water to a lost wanderer in a desert.

I may and will stumbled upon my feet, falls head over heels in order to chase the light. But one wouldn't know the result of his doing before he actually done it. So then, i would follow the light and slightly crossed my finger in hope that it would bring me happiness instead of sorrow.

*mind my English, i am a learner also :D *

I have a story about this. I have a friend, he's from east Java. He's new when I was in the second grade. Well, he came in to my class in the english lesson.

My teacher asked him to introduce him self. Bad for him, cuz he has some trouble in speaking 'F' and 'S'. Instead of speaking F, he speaks 'P'. Also in 'S', he speaks 'SH'.

So, this is so far i could remember. He said his name, age... and elses. Then my teacher gave an applause, which was not necessary :D

Then my friend said,

"Mam, where's my shit?"

"Pardon me?" ::ngakak::

It's so funny!! I guess he meant SEAT. But he pronounced it as 'SHIT' to me... [lol]

Most pleasant to the most annoying to the ears:

1. British English
2. American English
3. Irish English
4. Scots English
5. Australian English
6. SingLish

British Aristocratic English sounds real nice to the ears. They sound real cultured. There are other different British English whose accents don't sound as nice to the ear as this Aristocratic English. What I'm referring to "Aristocratic" is what you hear when Prince Edward, Charles, and others speak.

The Irish and Scots sound cool.
American English sounds normal and plain.
Australians make up their own incomprehensible words.
Singlish, sorry but that's the most annoying kind of English.

Let the flamings begin.

Call me Link,
Accent? A certain way of speaking, mainly due to intonation. In this case must be an english accent. I personally love how the brits speak. So elegant.. hehe. I happen to work in a Singapore based company and the people I report to (in Sing) speak English with a chinese accent. I've been having problems understanding them, so I stick to e-mails.

Australian grammars when I lived in Aussie:

*) Likes to add 'y' to EVERYTHING. :)
"I just did some stupid thingy"
"Hey, put down ur baggy, mate, it's so heavy."
"Hi, Dany, how r u?" (Huh, suddenly my friend Dane has changed name to Dany. :D )

*) Killer = cool, awesome.
"U are a killer, mate." = U are very cool ;)
"I wanna write a killer application." = I want to write a good computer program ;p

*) Keep pronouncing 'shares' as 'chess'. Esp old people.
Dane: "I own gold shares" (pronounced as chess)
Bob: "Huh, what is gold chess for?"
Dane: "I can sell the shares (pronounced as chess) sometimes in the rainy day."
Bob: "That's good idea, selling gold chess during rainy days." ;D

N be careful, Australians can speak thru their nose. :D

Yea, half way round the world. The world is getting smaller. I wanted to find people to speak with. I search google.com for "Bahasa" and KG forum comes up - and I joined.

I do soil survey - mapping, describing soils for publications, much like research.

Is Colorado in Texas? my geography is not too good.
So you don't like your prez eh? why don't you impeach him? Clinton was impeached for lesser action than Bush right?

You can't just impeach a US president simply because you don't like him. You have to screw up big time to be impeached. There were only 2 cases in the US history of impeachment.

Colorado is not in Texas. Colorado and Texas are both States.

1. I'm simply making a fact about how hard it is to impeach a US president. The Constitution made it so. Guess what, that is REAL.
2. If u want to politicize this whole thing go ahead.
3. "Unnecessary war" is an opinion and opinion is not a ground for impeachment. Breaking the law is ground for impeachment, even for "lesser action" i.e. lying under oath like Clinton. US laws deal with facts not opinions.
4. I'm not not arguing about the necessity of war either.
5. Last and not least, you should Chill out, DUDE! This is a place for fun. My first reply was not to flame u but to just bring out a simple statement of how hard it is to impeach a pres.

yes.. unnecessary war is only for people who Think Bush is doing so. - its a form of an opinion as what ramox said.

so.. let there be war.

even in the US.. there are Pro/Con war.

Pro.. cuz they got hurt by the twin tower attack. US is Pissed... u think a country like US president will stand there and do nothing while the people are pissed off?

or the president should calm things down, and let his people lose confidence in him while getting terrorist attacks from other countries?

if so.. do u think any countries will help the US from getting more attacks? - i personally don't think so.

the way to hurt the US, not by war, but by economy.. trust me.
US has one of the best army in the whole world, which i think Britain got the best people.. while US got the best equipments.

btw, both are allies.

its not an easy decision... war has its good and bad.

philosophically... war is good.. and bad.
it kills people, obviously, but it makes us value life more.. and by war.. there is a sense of togetherness in hardships.

of course... US is the largest supplier of war equipments. tanks, ships, planes, etc..
i must say.. not the best sometimes... but US got different selections. and who buys them? people who want to get into war.

and war.. does good to both parties.. one can kill, US can have the money.

creating a war over the US, only make the goverment to sell more arms.

shook down the economy.. just by a bit.. not much really.

ok.. i can write all day long.. but i'm at work...
anyways.. those are just my opinions

prwijono

Let's just hope and pray that the new US president will be better than before.

I think Bush is not totally wrong. Making a war against those bad people is a duty.
There must be a killing, as the effect of the war. Everybody should take this risk.

I only see the main purpose of this war, which will make a better living for all of us.

I simply cant imagine why people these days really like to fought each other and war... all of them especially Bush and the gang certainly nuts and crazy.it was like a f*****g criminality to do a war and its a stupid things I say. nonsense and wasting time. why cant Bush do something more useful like donate money to the orphans and to poor people. it seems that peace is no longer need in this world ::fu::

I hope the next one is better too, prwijono. It seems as if the president had a personal fight with Saddam - so many questions about how and why Iraq - why coalition and not UN.

There is investigation and talk of impeachment - this moves slowly.

Kyoko

btw.. bush did donate food and health supplies to iraq. and they're still supplying them

but.. for some brownie points, US got lots of IRAQis that won't even go back to iraq.

of course.. the ones that are in the news.. are the ones that want to go back.

more iraqis love the US lifestyle
trust me.. i have mid easterners as friends also

Kyoko, here is a few sites for you if you care to read more.

My guess - impeachment talks will become more serious if the president wins reelection this November, and if more Democrats are elected to the House of Representives. As it stands there are not enough Democrats to make a successful move to impeach.

gung ho or gung-ho

adj. Slang
Extremely enthusiastic and dedicated.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Earlier Gung Ho, motto of certain U.S. Marine forces in Asia during World War II, from Chinese (Mandarin) gnghé, to work together (short for gngyèhézuòshè, Chinese Industrial Cooperative Society) : gng, work + hé, together.]
Our Living Language Most of us are not aware of it today, but the word gung ho has been in English only since 1942 and is one of the many words that entered the language as a result of World War II. It comes from Mandarin Chinese gnghé, “to work together,” which was used as a motto by the Chinese Industrial Cooperative Society. Lieutenant Colonel Evans F. Carlson (1896-1947) borrowed the motto as a moniker for meetings in which problems were discussed and worked out; the motto caught on among his Marines (the famous “Carlson's Raiders”), who began calling themselves the “Gung Ho Battalion.” From there eager individuals began to be referred to as gung ho. Other words and expressions that entered English during World War II include flak, gizmo, task force, black market, and hit the sack.

It has ten-thousands students right now :o

I love Lord of the Rings too! I've read all the books and the movies are pretty good at staying true to them, although, in the 2nd one the Ents are Hasty! And they cut out Tom Bombadil:( . He was cool.

About this chubby chicks thing.... what exactly is the debate about? Is it about whether being chubby can be attractive or healthy? If it is, some guys in Oz reckon that what they call 'girl flub' is the sexiest thing on girls.

I only see the main purpose of this war, which will make a better living for all of us.

Sorry to bring this up again guys, but I just want to tell you a couple of things from an Aussie perspective.
Ok, about the 'bad people'. I assume you mean Saddam hussein or the terrorists.
With the terrorists, the western media, and governments portray all Islamic people in overseas countries as being terrorists. Even Indonesians. I don't believe this so dont attack me about it, but for Bush, Indonesian Islamic people are the 'bad people'.
Also, the situation in Iraq- the only good thing that came out of that war was the removal of Saddam Hussein's regime from power. But that would have happened by itself anyway as soon as he died, as even his closest supporters did not like the things he did to his people. The war in Iraq has probably created more terrorists, and I know that Australia is now a much more important attack point for Alquaida since its involvement in the war.
If this war was necessary, whcih I doubt, Bush should have gone through the UN security council and only acted after they passed a resolution authorising it.
Thank you for letting me have this rant.

BTW, I know that the overwhelming majority of muslims are peaceful and do not support terrorism.

The practice isn't on in Australia anymore- I didn't watch it much, only occasionally, but its ok. I like law and order and watch that sometimes, but they are all from America and the legal system in Australia is very different. In Australia the closest you come to a legal show is Blue Heelers and Whitecollar Blue (police shows)!

Congo word 'most untranslatable'
By Oliver Conway
BBC News
Last Updated: Tuesday, 22 June, 2004, 21:19 GMT 22:19 UK

The world's most difficult word to translate has been identified as "ilunga" from the Tshiluba language spoken in south-eastern DR Congo.
It came top of a list drawn up in consultation with 1,000 linguists.

Ilunga means "a person who is ready to forgive any abuse for the first time, to tolerate it a second time, but never a third time".

It seems straightforward enough, but the 1,000 language experts identified it as the hardest word to translate.

In second place was shlimazl which is Yiddish for "a chronically unlucky person".

Third was Naa, used in the Kansai area of Japan to emphasise statements or agree with someone.

Although the definitions seem fairly precise, the problem is trying to convey the local references associated with such words, says Jurga Zilinskiene, head of Today Translations, which carried out the survey.

"Probably you can have a look at the dictionary and... find the meaning," she said. "But most importantly it's about cultural experiences and... cultural emphasis on words."

The speed at which simultaneous interpreters work only adds to the difficulty of trying to explain words with complex meanings.

And technical jargon, often found in politics, business or sport, has difficulties of its own.

Miss Zilinskiene's own bete noir is "googly", a cricketing term for "an off-breaking ball disguised by the bowler with an apparent leg-break action".

But then many people find cricket incomprehensible anyway. Naa.

yes partly it was beck's decision but MU didn't put much of a fight, considering their manager Alex Ferguson and Becks had personal problems towards each other. If it were up to me I'd kick Fergie out and keep Becks.

Well Luna, you must have watched EPL only recently to hold RvN in such great image. IMHO MU's greatest striker is still Eric Cantona. ::keyen::

I think selling Beckham is the right thing to do!

He's got a bad influence for the younger lads in MU and Fergie realized this and imidiately sold him. I think beck's forgot that his main job is a footballer not an artist.......

Although I admit our performance is not quite good last season....
But I'm quite sure that next season we will beat chelsea's and arsenal's asses......

Glory Glory Man United!

hehe, a man u fans aren't you?
many football analysts already stated that the main 2 reasons why MU failed last season were the absence of Rio and Becks.
Rio's absence proved very costly seeing how Man U's defense so easily rattled even when playing against non powerful teams, whilst Becks' absence made the formerly prolific RvN to be the barren RvN ;p

The reason fergie let becks out wasn't all about him being an artist or having bad influence and all but more because of their personal disagreement. Remember the incident with the flying shoe to beckham's upper eye area? :D

AlphaOmega
08-07-2004, 11:48 AM
yes, I recalled that incident, but the manager have to show, who's the boss.....and Fergie has clearly stated that he's the boss by selling Becks.....

I agree that United's disappointing performance is because Rio's absence, and beckham departure is also affecting our performance but Rio is the main problem not becks.....

Beck's has lost his star player status since he left United and we've found a new one in Cristiano.....

Yes, I admit that I miss his crosses and free kicks but the show must go on.....

I was happy hearing robben is going to old trafford but in the end he turned our back for chelsea......I was hoping we can buy another winger as a backup for giggs and ronaldo......

I'm quite sure that United will kick arsenal ass and will take the cup back to Manchester where it should be belong.....

okay2.. no point debating w/ a hardcore fans as u obviously are ;p
let's just see next season. If I'm not mistaken the first MU match will be against Chelsea! Now that's a show worth waiting for.
Anyway next season the EPL would be very tight. ManU and Arsie would face major competition with the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool. The latters both just recruited new high profile coaches, Mourinho and Rafa Benitez respectively.
Don't expect MU to regain the title so easily.

Btw, is robben really going to manu? i thought he already signed with Chelsea ::bingung::
